about

MAP of EVERYTHING. A lot of my favorite older Yankee Ghost songs are on this one. Several, including "Ain't That a Shame", "Unromantic Day", "Waves Are Breaking", and "Cleveland Heights" were options for our previous record, NATIONAL ROAD, but we "saved" them for later for some reason. The first full length we've done entirely at home, except for "I Know the Feeling" (which Brett did for us properly at Firefly Studios. Then he slammed this whole record to tape when it was done. Brett Dennison does right by YG examples #664 and #665.) I'm pretty happy with it considering it was done with just four extremely used relatively cheap microphones.

"Unromantic Day": I had a lot more backing vocals and handclaps tracked, but my brother asked, "Do you want this to sound like a hippie singalong?"

"Cleveland Heights": Didn't love the way my original track of harmonica sounded. So I bought (in Corry, PA of all places, while Manny was out in the car) a nice, new expensive harp to do it over. Made absolutely no difference.

"I'm Letting You Down": The way this track turned out inspired us to record the whole record on our own. I played drums on this song (pretty much everything else on the record is Kate, obviously.) I had the railroad snare part down quickly, but decided to add the kick afterwards...way harder than it sounds, especially for a fake drummer like me. I was all over the place. So I finally got down and played the kick pedal with my hands CPR-style with my eyes closed. Twenty seconds into the take I accidentally head-butted the rim of the snare hard enough to make my forehead bleed. That was the keeper take, of course. Kate would've happily done it all painlessly in 3 minutes.

"Milan": My car was literally smashed by a tree in a storm while I was recording this.

"You Won't See Me No More": If you don't record music at home but live with someone who does, you've made bad choices. You'll constantly be told, "We're doing drums, bass, lead guitar, etc. today, and it will be too loud for you to watch TV, read, or do anything. Sorry." Or, "We're doing vocals today, so please be quiet, and don't watch TV, walk around your house, or do anything. Sorry." At the final fade you can hear my wife putting silverware in the dishwasher upstairs, God bless her.
