about

I definitely make fun of bands that take five years between albums. But, to be fair, most of those other bands don't have day jobs and also have to drive to Toledo every time they want to record something.

Prescott and I had been home recording for years but decided to do another album with Brett at FIrefly because, well, he is just too damn good.

We recorded this album over probably 20-25 days, but those days were spread out over five years. We released a few EPs in the interim but always knew our second album was just over the horizon.

As before, our pal J.D. Fleming played all the drums and percussion. That dude, man. If you're in Lexington, Kentucky, and want to start a rock band, I highly recommend looking J.D. up. The only time I ever saw him get angry during the entire sessions is when the Little Caesars down the street from Firefly ran out of cheesy bread.

I have fond memories of recording this. For the first few sessions Firefly was still housed in an old Haskins farmhouse, but then Brett decided to get more real and actually rent office space in Toledo to outfit his studio, the gear of which had been amassing at an intense rate. It was as if he had a dozen more cool things every time we went in for a weekend to lay down the thickness.

Because we were in an actual city, friends stopped by more frequently. Our pal Eric was almost always there with his cool-ass girlfriend Kate who (fate of fates) happened to be a drummer, playing in the hilariously bizarre Dirty Damn Band. One thing led to another and we four started playing actual honest rock shows, the first one being in Cleveland on April 23, 2010, a few months after Kate and Eric got legally wedded. Having a married rhythm section definitely has its perks.

Props again to J.D. for understanding the situation. He was Our Dude in the studio, but he had little to no interest in driving up from his new home in Lexington, Kentucky, in order to play shows every couple weeks in some dive in front of 14 people for $20. Would you?

As with Bull Simple, recording weekends were something that we tried to make as enjoyable as possible. Food, drinks, frivolity, nights out on the town in the finest night life spots that Northwest Ohio has to offer – it was extremely fun. Some of my fondest memories from the time include: getting drunk at Red Lobster; hosting two rock bands for a weekend at my mom’s house when she was out of town; forcing Kate to watch “Robocop” for the first time; and smoking ten million cigarettes.
